Constitution allows food of choice, says Mehbooba

Says miscreants must be given exemplary punishment

Advocating exemplary punishment to miscreants responsible for taking the law into their own hands, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has said the Indian Constitution allows a person to eat whatever he wants without hurting the sentiments of others.

“Those who create disturbance are in a minority and the majority are in favour of maintaining communal harmony and secular fabric of the country,” Mehbooba said.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a party function, Mehbooba said the Indian Constitution guaranteed people the right to eat whatever they wanted within the four walls of their house, but without hurting the sentiments of others.

“At a time when people are not able to afford pulses, we are getting into the argument of which type of meat should we consume,” she said. She castigated any kind of hooliganism and rioting by miscreants and demanded strict punishment to such people.

“What our government did after the Udhampur incident (killing of trucker Zahid) — first slapping Public Safety Act and later booking them under Section 302 — the whole country should follow this and give strict punishment to miscreants irrespective of their affiliation to religion or party,” the PDP president said.

Appreciating the secular character of people of the country after Dadri lynching, Mehbooba said those who killed were Hindus, but those who returned their awards were Hindus as well. “I am hopeful that the Constitution of the country will take care of everything,” she said.
