Rain brings respite as mercury dips in ValleyIncessant rainfall that has continued since midnight brought respite from an increasingly hot weather in the region today as mercury registered a steep fall across the Kashmir valley.
Rain that lashed all 10 districts of the Valley since yesterday was continuing till late in the evening today. The downpour caused a significant fall in the mercury, which was nearing a record high in recent days.
In the city here, where 10 mm rainfall was received in 24 hours, the maximum day temperature was registered at 15.7 degree Celsius, according to the Meteorological Department. It was nine degrees below the average 25 degree Celsius and at least 15 degrees less than the high of 32 degree Celsius recorded in recent days.
The Kashmir valley witnessed hot weather last week as mercury rose six to seven degrees above average and neared a high of past 10 years in Srinagar which was recorded in May, 2007, when mercury touched 32.4 degree Celsius.
However, light rainfall that has continued for several hours cooled the weather as the maximum day temperature across the Kashmir valley remained eight to ten degrees less than the average, the Meteorological Department said.
In north Kashmir’s Gulmarg resort, which is a famed tourist destination, the maximum day temperature was recorded at 8.0 degree Celsius making it the coldest place in the region. The minimum in Gulmarg was recorded at 5.4 degree Celsius.
The Meteorological Department said light rainfall and thundershowers are likely to continue across most places in the Kashmir valley tomorrow also and predicted an increase in the temperature. The department said there is a possibility of light rainfall and thundershower in the city tomorrow while the temperature can reach a maximum of 26 degree Celsius and minimum might be around 12 degree Celsius.
