163 People booked under PSA in 50 daysThe PDP-BJP government has booked 163 people in Valley under the infamous Public Safety Act (PSA) during ongoing unrest in the Valley.
According to a data compiled by the government, a copy of which is with Kashmir Post, 163 people including separatist leaders and youth have been booked under PSA.
The official document reveals that the PSA has been invoked against the 163 people in last 50 days.
It further discloses that over thousand persons are currently under the police scanner and government intends to book more people under the PSA to stop protests and stone pelting.
Those who have been booked are accused of either stone pelting or organizing events that led to violence in the Valley.
The detention orders under PSA are generally passed by the District Magistrate(s) on consideration of the dossier prepared by the concerned SSP or SP.
Keeping in view the facts and circumstances of the case and after satisfying himself about the adequacy of the material placed before him and the activities of the subject, District Magistrate concerned passes an order under Section (8)(1)(a)(i) or (a-i) of the Act.
The order is to be approved by the government within 12 days in terms of sub-section (4) of the section (8) of the Act. If approved, the case is then forwarded to the State Advisory Board constituted for the purpose for its opinion.
When a person is booked under PSA, government has the power to arrest, jail him/her arresting without any trial for up to six months on mere suspicion that he/she may be acting in any manner prejudicial to the maintenance of public order.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti in her speech in Assembly during budget session had said that some acts like PSA, AFSPA and Disturbed Areas Act 1997 require critical review of the security situation and other relevant factors.
