Kulgam areas shut for 2nd day to mourn killing of Hizb militantComplete shutdown was observed in Kaimoh and adjoining areas of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Tuesday to pay homage to Hizb ul Mujahideen militant Dawood Ahmad Sheikh. Violent clashes also broke out in the area resulting in injuries to several people.
Sheikh died in a brief gunfight with government forces in Buchroo village of Kulgam on Sunday night.
Shops remained closed for the second consecutive day in Kaimoh, Khudwani, Redwani, Frisal, Yaripora and adjoining areas while traffic was also off the roads.
Witnesses said that police and paramilitary forces wearing riot gears and armed with sophisticated weapons were deployed in strength in Kaimoh and Khudwani to thwart any attempts of protests.
They said that the entry points to Kaimoh have been sealed by the forces.
However, in the evening youth hit streets in Khudwani area and clashed with forces.
“The youth attacked CRPF camp at rice research institute with stones and bricks,” reports said. They said that the forces lobbed tear gas canisters and used pellet and pepper guns to quell the agitated youth.
Several youth sustained injuries in the clashes and two of them with severe injuries were rushed to Sub District Hospital (SDH) Kaimoh, reports said, adding that several CRPF men and cops also sustained injuries in the clashes.
