The opposition National Conference is watching the political developments in the aftermath of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s death.
Senior party leaders have decided to keep quiet over the issue of succession within the Peoples Democratic Party.
Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed breathed his last at the
All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi on Thursday.
Working president of the National Conference and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is reported to have told his party men to maintain silence over the succession issue and not utter a word of criticism against the PDP-BJP alliance. The party leaders have been asked to wait and watch as to which side the political equations work.
The National Conference which had an opportunity to tie up with the BJP in the 2014 Assembly elections had decided against it as some of the senior leaders had warned the party of serious consequences following an alliance with the BJP.
Party leaders Abdul Rahim Rather and Ali Mohammad Sagar and Agha Ruhullah had said such an alliance would be politically suicidal for the state and the party in particular.
Omar heard the arguments of his colleagues and was convinced that the NC that had played the role of the opposition from 2002 to 2008 could once again play the same role. With these thoughts, he had left for London in December 2014. On his return, he had submitted his resignation.
By that time, the BJP and the PDP had started working on the nuts and bolts to stitch up an alliance.
