Gangster Shot Dead in Broad Daylight by Rival Gang in Jammu
Jammu 21 Jan: In a brazen act of violence, a 37-year-old gangster was shot dead by members of a rival gang in broad daylight in Jammu. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at Jewel Chowk, a busy market area, sending shockwaves through the community.
Incident Details
The victim, identified as Sumit Jandiyal, also known as Gataru, was intercepted by three assailants while he was walking through the marketplace. The attackers fired four rounds at Jandiyal, critically injuring him. Passersby, in a state of panic, immediately alerted the authorities. Jandiyal was swiftly transported to the Government Medical College hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead on arrival.
Gang Rivalry
Sumit Jandiyal was the kingpin of the infamous Gataru gang and had a notorious history of criminal activities. He was detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA) last year due to his involvement in several criminal cases. Despite his criminal background, the attack has left the community reeling, highlighting the pervasive issue of gang violence in the region.
Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Anand Jain confirmed that the shooting was a result of an ongoing gang rivalry and not related to any terrorist activities. “This was a targeted attack orchestrated by a rival gang,” Jain stated. “We have formed a special investigation team to track down the culprits.”
Escape and Investigation
Following the shooting, the assailants fled the scene on a commandeered two-wheeler, making it challenging for the police to immediately apprehend them. A manhunt has been launched, and the police are pursuing all leads to bring the attackers to justice.
The special investigation team, comprising experienced officers, is tasked with analyzing CCTV footage from the area and gathering witness statements. The police have urged the public to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation.
Community Reaction
The incident has sparked outrage and fear among the local residents and business owners in Jewel Chowk. Many have expressed concerns about the deteriorating law and order situation and the boldness of criminal elements operating in the region.
“We demand immediate action and increased security measures to prevent such incidents in the future,” said a local shopkeeper. “The authorities need to ensure the safety of the community.”
Government Response
In response to the incident, the local administration has vowed to take strict action against those involved in gang activities. Enhanced patrolling and increased surveillance in sensitive areas have been initiated to prevent further violence.
“We will not tolerate such brazen acts of violence,” said a senior government official. “The law will take its course, and we will ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.”

The killing of Sumit Jandiyal underscores the growing problem of gang rivalry in Jammu. It highlights the need for comprehensive measures to curb gang violence and ensure public safety. The local administration is expected to work closely with law enforcement agencies to develop strategies to dismantle criminal networks and rehabilitate those involved in gang activities.
