Some of the scenes witnessed at the SMHS Hospital on Sunday were reminiscent of 2016 when the trauma theatre was flooded with those injured by government forces’ firing.
Women wailed outside the theatre as young men waited eagerly to hear from the doctors about condition of the injured.
“Oh my God, have your mercy upon us,” a woman in the 50s cried aloud.
The woman, who identified herself as Sara from main town Shopian, said the bodies of her son and brother are riddled with pellet ammunition.
“Please somebody tell me about their conditions,” she sighed before being taken away by a youth from the spot.
A doctor said both the injured were stable but they have severe pellet injuries.
However, the doctor said, there were “bigger worries”.
At least 11 youth undergoing treatment at the hospital have bullet injuries, the doctor said.
“Two of them are critical,” he said. One of the injured is 37-year-old Manzoor Ahmad from Kulgam. He has a bullet injury in head.
There are 20 others with pellet injuries in their eyes and body who were rushed to the hospital throughout the day from different areas of Shopian.
According to the hospital data, at least 11 injured have pellet injuries in their eyes.
“There were no ambulances in the (district) hospital. We ferried at least four bullet-hit youth in one ambulance,” said a youth who identified himself as Fayaz Ahmad of Arihal, Shopian.
His brother was one among the four and had been hit by bullet in the abdomen. The doctors have told Ahmad that his brother was out of danger.
In one corner of the hospital, outside the trauma theater, a youth was inconsolable. His brother, Waseem Ahmad, had suffered pellet injuries at the encounter site in his both eyes and body.
“The doctors said they are evaluating him (the brother) and can’t say anything as of now,” Ahmad’s brother cried.
He asserted that apart from resorting to bullet and pellet firing at the encounter site, the forces also beat up the protesters.
Since this morning, a total of 45 injured have been referred to the SMHS Hospital from Shopian.
At Bone and Joint Hospital, one of the two injured persons is battling for life. Both of them have bullet injuries.
“One of the injured is Amir and he has suffered bullet injuries in both legs and one arm, resulting in excessive blood loss…we are trying to resuscitate him,” said a doctor.
Some of the youths undergoing treatment at the SMHS hospital have suffered pellet injuries at Chattabal area of Srinagar, where three militants were killed on Saturday.
The third critically-injured youth has been identified as Sufail Ahmed from Shopian. He has a bullet injury in abdomen and was being treated in the ICU.
