BJP Confident of Historic Win in J&K: Internal Surveys Show Positive Trends

BJP upbeat about J&K results; sure of first-ever win in Valley, Leaders say internal party surveys suggest positive outcomes

The BJP leadership is optimistic about the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir election results, with internal party surveys suggesting “positive outcomes.” The party is hopeful of securing its first-ever win in the Kashmir Valley, specifically targeting the Gurez Assembly seat in Baramulla.

Although the BJP has never won a seat in the Valley, party leaders believe they can break this streak, especially with the support of allied parties like People’s Conference and Apni Party. BJP strategists predict a potential win of 33 seats — 32 in Jammu and one in the Valley — while friendly parties and BJP-backed Independents are expected to secure additional seats, pushing the number past the majority mark of 48 in the 95-member UT Assembly.

This election is significant as it is the first in the region since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, and numerous factors, including Independent candidates and new parties, could influence the results.

The BJP’s internal surveys project that the National Conference-Congress-CPM alliance could win 40 seats, while PDP and Engineer Rashid’s party are expected to win about seven seats combined.

BJP general secretary Tarun Chugh emphasised that this election represents a contest between India’s narrative and Pakistan’s narrative, confident that “India’s narrative will win.” The party fielded 19 candidates in the Valley, the lowest number in 28 years, and hopes to improve its standing since the 2014 elections, where it won 25 seats in Jammu and formed an alliance with PDP.

Chugh highlighted the importance of the peaceful conduct of the elections, noting it as a victory for the democratic process and the increasing faith of Kashmiris in that process. He added that the success of the District Development Council elections after Article 370’s abrogation marked a turning point, with a significant number of votes cast against the Gupkar alliance in favor of stability.
