The National Conference (NC) has urged the Governor to advise the state government to call an all-party meeting to have an extensive discussion on various aspects of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) being rolled out in the country from July 1.
The delegation, led by former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, conveyed to the Governor that an all-party meeting would allay the fears and concerns of various stakeholders and put the entire concept in public domain for an open debate. The delegation apprised the Governor of their concerns relating to the proposed GST legislation which is to be discussed in the J&K legislature session in Srinagar on June 17.
The members of the delegation included MLAs Ali Mohammad Sagar, Mohd. Shafi, Mohd. Akbar Lone, Devender Singh Rana; Nasir Sogami, provincial president, NC; Choudhary Ramzan, former MLA and Shami Oberoi. The Governor promised the delegation that their concerns would be taken up with the CM.
A spokesman of the NC said the delegation apprised the Governor of the party’s fears and apprehensions about the possible and seemingly imminent extension of 101st Amendment of the Constitution of India to the state and said such a plan would have wider and irreversibly adverse ramifications on the state’s fiscal autonomy and would impinge upon the residuary powers enjoyed by the state.
It also submitted a memorandum requesting the Governor to “use his good offices to impress upon the state government to ensure that it did not take any arbitrary step which could have a far reaching negative consequence on the residuary powers enjoyed by the state and consequently its fiscal autonomy”.
