Students clash with security forces, 4 held

Four students were arrested today after hundreds of them clashed with security forces as a part of the continuing protests in educational institutions in the Kashmir valley.
Dozens of students came out onto the roads in the Baba-Demb locality of Srinagar, chanting anti-India slogans and threw stones at security personnel.
Students of Gandhi Memorial College and MPML Higher Secondary School in the Baba-Demb area blocked the vehicular traffic and resortedto sloganeering.
The security forces deployed in the area resorted to lathicharge to disperse the students. However, after intense stone-throwing by the students, the security forces fired teargas shells.
“No one was injured in the clashes, which lasted for nearly one hour,” Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Maharaj Gunj, Shafeeq Ahmad told Kashmir Post. However, four students were arrested for questioning, he said. “We are releasing three of them after the questioning,” he said.
Protests were witnessed at the restive village of Palhallan in Pattan sub-district of north Kashmir. Students tried to block the Srinagar-Baramulla highway and threw stones on the security forces, triggering clashes.
The security forces resorted to teargas shelling to push back the students. Officials said two students received minor injuries in the clashes.
Students have been holding protests since April 17 after at least 50 protesting students were injured in police action at Pulwama Degree College on April 15.
