Two ex-passport officials get 4-year jail term for fraudA special anti-corruption court has awarded rigorous imprisonment for four years to former passport officer Bashir Ahmad Zargar and his deputy MA Turi. The court imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh each on the officials.
The special anti-corruption court for CBI cases in Srinagar convicted the duo in a corruption case involving illegal sale of passport forms and misappropriation of Rs 6,63,661.
“Both convicted officials were taken into custody from the open court and sent to Central Jail in Srinagar under judicial custody,” said special public prosecutor Asifa Padroo, who had pleaded the case on behalf of the CBI. The decision was announced by the court on Tuesday.
As per the CBI investigation, the officials entered into a criminal conspiracy between 1999 and 2001 with the aim of causing wrongful gain to themselves by way of sale of passport application forms.
Upon receipt of a complaint, a case was registered against the duo in the CBI branch on May 10, 2001, for misappropriation of Rs 6,63,661.
After conducting a thorough investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet against Zargar and Turi in the court of the special judge, anti-corruption, on October 25, 2002.
The CBI had, in its probe, found the officials guilty of misuse of issuance of passport forms and misappropriation of Rs 6,63,661.
