Jammu tense after ‘desecration’ of another temple by dismissed Police CopClose on the heels of desecration of a temple in Janipur area of Jammu, another temple was ransacked in Nanak Nagar locality by a drunken dismissed police constable.
As a preventive measure and to avoid any flare-up in the situation, the District Administration has extended the internet ban up to June 17 and booked the accused-Gurcharan Singh alias Minta-under Public Safety Act (PSA).
Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Simrandeep Singh confirmed to Kashmir POST about slapping of PSA on the accused.
Earlier, the ban on internet services was imposed after a “mentally disturbed person” from Doda District ransacked a temple in Janipur locality of the district.
Eyewitnesses told Kashmir POST that one person, under the influence of liquor entered into the premises of Shiv Temple in Nanak Nagar area of the city and allegedly desecrated various idols placed inside the temple.
They said that after the incident, priests, local traders and shopkeepers assembled inside the temple premises and informed the Gandhi Nagar Police Station about the entire episode.
They were raising slogans against the desecration of temple and failure of police to control law and order situation in the Jammu District.
People in the locality also kept their shops and business establishments closed as a mark of protest against the district administration and police for their failure to check repeated attempts of desecration of temples in the city.
Later, DC Jammu, Simrandeep Singh and SSP Jammu, Dr Sunil Gupta along with officials from administration and police reached the spot and pacified the people by assuring them that strict action will be taken against the accused under law.
Meanwhile the National Sikh Front (NSF), through an official handout, condemned the sacrilegious act at the Shiv Temple.
“National Sikh Front condemns the sacrilege and damage of temple by miscreants in Nanak Nagar temple. Please maintain peace and harmony. The culprit should be given harsh punishment”, the statement issued by the front reads.
According to DC Jammu, the accused was dismissed from Police Department as a constable on charges of “indiscipline” and “unauthorized absence” from duties.
