Incessant rain exposes Srinagar’s drainage system

Incessant rain exposes Srinagar’s drainage systemIncessant rain since Tuesday has resulted in water logging on all major roads and lanes of the city creating difficulties for the people.
In the summer capital, residents said they were forced to stay indoors as rain had resulted in flooding of all routes, restricting the pedestrian as well as vehicular movement.
The locals were aghast at the authorities for failing to restore the defunct drainage system. “Due to water logged roads neither our children are able to go to school nor are we able to go to work. Despite repeated appeals, the authorities have failed to work on developing a proper drainage system,” said a Wazir Bagh resident.
Residents said even the major roads in Srinagar had not been dewatered, which led to traffic congestion in most parts. “Dewatering has not been done since yesterday…,” said another resident.
The problem has particularly aggravated in the low lying colonies of Srinagar, like Indira Nagar, Nowgan, Natipora and Naik Bagh, where residents said they could not event step out of their houses as drain water had gathered in their lawns.
Officials, however, said they were trying to dewater areas and soon major drainage works would be taken up in Srinagar to address the people’s concerns.
Most of the drains in Srinagar are lying defunct for the last two years. No major drainage projects have been undertaken by the authorities concerned to mitigate the problem.
The SMC had faced losses worth crores of rupees during the September 2014 floods.
