NIT Srinagar Student's Social Media Post Sparks Outrage, Prompts Legal Action

Police have booked a student of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar for posting a hurtful video on social media, officials said today.

The action comes after the students of the institute held a massive protest against the derogatory video clip.

Talking about the incident, IGP Kashmir VK Birdi said that upon receiving the information and a written letter from the registrar of NIT campus for seeking legal action, they have taken action under relevant laws and have set an investigation into motion.

“This evening police received information about a protest at NIT campus and upon investigation it surfaced that a student had posted a video on social media which had hurt the sentiments of people, especially religious sentiments”, IGP Kashmir said, as per news agency GNS.

He said the student had shared a clip already posted by some YouTuber.

Protests were held on Tuesday by local students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) against an “inflammatory” social media post by a non-local student.

Local students of NIT locked both the entrances to the college and raised slogans against the social media post by a non-local student which, they said, has hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims.

College authorities have sent the non-local student home on leave while the protesting students demanded stringent action against him by the authorities.
