The night temperature across the Kashmir valley touched freezing levels with Leh town in remote Ladakh region registering a low of -8.6 degrees Celsius overnight and the city here recorded a minimum of -1.9 degrees Celsius.
The drop in night temperature has come after several days of the overcast sky which had allowed mercury to remain above freezing point in many parts of the region.
In Srinagar, the state’s summer capital, temperature overnight had dropped to a low of – 1.9 degrees Celsius, according to a bulletin issued by the Meteorological Centre here. It was a departure of two degrees from average minimum temperature for this time of the year.
The minimum temperature for the rest of week is forecast to remain one to two degrees below zero-degree mark in Srinagar and the weather is likely to remain dry.
According to the climatological table of the Indian Meteorological Department, the mean minimum temperature in Srinagar during November is 1 degree Celsius which suggests the current levels of temperature are colder than expected. November opens the door to a long winter in Kashmir which lasts almost four months.
The night temperature in other towns and meadow resorts of the Kashmir valley has also registered a significant dip. The gateway town of Qazigund in south Kashmir recorded a low of -0.8 degrees Celsius and the frontier Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded -2.7 degrees Celsius overnight.
In south Kashmir’s Pahalgam resort, the minimum temperature overnight was recorded at -3 degrees Celsius while the mercury in north Kashmir’s Gulmarg resort had dropped to -0.6 degrees Celsius. The winter’s cold grip, however, is intensifying in the remote Ladakh region where its sparsely populated towns are recording freezing night temperatures.
In Leh district of Ladakh, the mercury overnight had dropped to – 8.6 degrees Celsius. Ladakh is one of the coldest regions of the state with the mercury falling to as low as minus 25 degrees during the winter months.
