No respite from choked drains in Srinagar

No respite from choked drains in SrinagarAs rain continued to lash the city since last evening, flooding in the summer capital has increased difficulties for local commuters as well as transporters.
Most of the drains here have been choking for the last two years. No major drainage projects have been undertaken by the authorities concerned to end the woes of people.
“Rain brings the problem of poor drainage to the notice of the authorities, but once the weather improves they forget it and do nothing in this regard. There is no accountability,” said Abdul Rashid, a resident of Chanapora.
Officials said they had dewatered most of the areas, but due to continuous rain since the last evening, the problem surfaced again and again forcing people to stay indoors.
“The problem needs a permanent solution as most of the areas in Srinagar are low lying, therefore there should be a proper system in place,” said Khalid Ahmad, a resident of Nowgam in Srinagar.
The drainage system in Srinagar was worst hit during the floods in September 2014 as most of the sewers choked. The overflowing drains at the Regal chowk, MA Road, old city, Babadem and many other parts have added to the difficulties of commuters.
Senior officials of the SMC said they were soon going to address the problem of poor drainage through centrally sponsored programmes by starting two major projects in Srinagar.
