Mehbooba takes up students’ admission in LS

There is some good news for Jammu and Kashmir students who are struggling to get admission in various colleges and universities in the country.
Mehbooba takes up students’ admission in LSThe Union Ministry for Human Resource Development (MHRD) has swung into action to ensure that eligible students from the state get admission under the supernumerary quota.
This has become possible after Member of Parliament Mehbooba Mufti raised the issue many a time in Parliament and at various other platforms.
Mehbooba today again raised the issue in the Lok Sabha during the Zero Hour and sought the intervention of HRD Minister Smriti Irani to effectively implement the UGC scheme on admission to J&K students in recognised colleges and universities of the country under the supernumerary quota.
As per the UGC guidelines, all recognised universities have to give admission to two students in the supernumerary quota. This is in addition to the migrant quota.
“Of late, as per reports, most of the universities have started refusing admissions to the students from J&K under this quota,” she said.
Earlier, in a written reply to a question by Mehbooba in the Lok Sabha on the issue, the MHRD said, “Following the reports that some colleges and universities were refusing admission to the students, the UGC issued fresh directive to all universities to admit the eligible students from J&K under the supernumerary quota.”
Mehbooba has constantly been raising the issue of refusal of admission to J&K students by colleges and universities outside the state.
The Union Ministry for Human Resource Development said in the last year, 20 representations were received from students of J&K regarding refusal of admissions by Delhi University colleges under the supernumerary quota.
The Ministry said 406 admissions of students from J&K had been made under the supernumerary quota so far through the centralised counselling process under the special scholarship scheme.
