President Ram Nath Kovind to visit Siachen base camp today

President Ram Nath Kovind will visit the Siachen base camp, world’s highest battlefield, on Thursday and interact with soldiers. President Kovind, who is also the Supreme Commander of the armed forces, will be the first President to visit this camp since the visit of then President APJ Abdul Kalam in 2004. According to Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President will also visit the Kumar post, located at 4,800 metres, from where supplies are dispatched to pickets on the Siachen Glacier. The strategic 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway was thrown open to traffic on Friday ahead of the normal time. The road was closed in winter due to the accumulation of snow at Zojila. The delay in the reopening of the strategic 434-km Srinagar-Leh national highway for vehicular traffic after snow clearance has caused great resentment among residents in Kargil and Leh districts. The Ladakh region today observed a peaceful bandh to condemn a low-intensity explosion near the Kalchakara ground in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, where Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and Buddhist pilgrims are participating in a month-long Kalchakra puja since January 2.
