It was a super entertaining Sunday for people from all walks of life, especially children, today during the “Big Street” event organised by the Rotary Club, Jammu Tawi, and 92.7 Big FM at Apsara Road, Gandhi Nagar, here.
There was no movement of vehicles on the road. The event was conducted to create awareness among Jammu residents about benefits of walking and cycling and to give pollution-free atmosphere.
The whole Apsara market was abuzz with different activities like yoga, Zumba dance, tug-of-war, cycling, street football, skating, selfie corner, singing and dancing, besides food stalls.
The route, which is one of the busiest in the Jammu city, today was free from any kind of vehicles movement as children were seen enjoying cycling, skating, etc, accompanied by their parents. Not only the families of Rotarians, but also the general public was upbeat about the event.
“It is hard to believe for the participants that there was no vehicle movement on the ever-busy route. It looks so good on a vacant road, which is occupied with vehicles on working days. We enjoyed a lot today by participating in so many fun activities,” said Anmol, a student.
“In today’s hectic schedule when everybody is so busy to spare some time for recreational activities, such type of events have a refreshing impact which eases the stress. Even if we have to go to our friend’s house living close by we often use bikes/cars to reach there. We hardly walk because of addiction to motors, which is not good”, said Rakesh, one of the participants in the event.
“In the present lifestyle, we have forgotten to walk altogether. Our total dependence on automobiles has adversely affected our health in addition to diseases caused by pollution due to vehicular traffic,” he maintained.
Radio Jockeys (RJs) of 92.7 Big FM entertained the participants and general public. Later, prizes were distributed to the winners of the various events held in “Big Street”.
