Three days after appealing to the country’s leadership to listen to the voices of pain from the state, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
She apprised him about the overall situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister stressed finding ways and means to end the cycle of violence in the state by dealing with alienation among the youth.
She said the people, who had suffered immensely during the turmoil in the past three decades, were looking up to the country’s political leadership to support them in getting out of the cycle of uncertainty and deaths.
Reiterating her demand for peaceful engagement with all stakeholders in this regard, Mehbooba sought frequent meetings at the highest level between India and Pakistan. She also favoured the idea of the two Army commands remaining in touch with each other to minimise tension near the border in the state.
Discussing the situation in Jammu, she asked Modi to step in to ensure that justice was delivered to the family of the eight-year-old girl who was allegedly raped and murdered in Kathua village.
Pertinently, residents of the Jammu region have been demanding a CBI inquiry into the incident.
Pleading for taking the cross-Line of Control (LoC) movement to the next level, the Chief Minister sought opening of more historic routes across the LoC to build public confidence in peaceful engagement. She also sought opening of the Sharda Peth, an ancient seat of learning across the LoC, and developing it on the lines of Nalanda and Takshila.
The implementation of the Agenda of Alliance of the coalition partners PDP and BJP, execution of Prime Minister’s Development Plan and mega developmental projects also came up for discussion during the meeting.
