Hundreds of people, including journalists from across the Valley, visited photojournalist Kamran Yousuf’s house in the Tahab area of Pulwama district today.
Kamran reached home on Thursday evening after being granted bail by a Delhi court on Tuesday. The photojournalist remained in detention for more than six months in Delhi’s Tihar Jail.
Kamran was arrested by the National Investigation Agency on September 5 last year (NIA) for allegedly indulging in stone-throwing.
A Sessions Judge in a Delhi court on Tuesday remarked: “The NIA has not placed on record any single photo/video showing that the applicant/accused was indulging in stone-throwing activities at any site.”
Kamran will, however, have to appear in further proceedings in the case before the case is settled in the court of law.
The lensman along with his mother Rubeena and uncle Irshad reached Tahab from Delhi on Thursday evening. As news spread about Kamran arrival, his relatives, neighbours, colleagues and journalists from across the Valley reached his house today to congratulate the family on his release.
Kamran did not talk much but only greeted people with a friendly smile.
His mother, however, expressed gratitude to the people of Kashmir in general and the journalistic fraternity in particular for standing by the family in testing times.
“His release would not have been impossible without the help extended by people,” Rubeena said, adding that she was indebted to all those who had helped the family.
Kamran’s uncle Irshad said many people had gone out of their way to help the family and the camaraderie in the journalistic fraternity was heartwarming.
“We are simple people from a humble background. We did not know how to proceed and which door to knock at. If it was not for people who came forward to help, Kamran’s release would not have been possible,” Irshad said.
