Omar Abdullah Moves Forward: Seeks Swearing-In Date with LG Sinha

Abdullah announced that he handed over letters of support from the Congress, CPM, AAP, and several independent members to the LG.

National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah met with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday, October 11, to formally stake his party’s claim for government formation in Jammu and Kashmir. After the meeting, Abdullah announced that he handed over letters of support from the Congress, CPM, AAP, and several independent members to the LG.

“I requested him to fix a date for the swearing-in ceremony so that the government can start functioning. It will be a long process as there is Centre rule here,” Abdullah stated. He explained that the LG would first need to send the relevant documents to Rashtrapati Bhawan and then to the Home Ministry. “We have been told it will take 2-3 days. So if it happens before Tuesday, we will have the swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday,” he added.

This government formation follows the National Conference’s significant win, securing 42 seats in the new assembly, contributing to a combined strength of 119 seats, which includes 24 from the Pakistan-occupied region and five nominated members. This marks the first elected government in Jammu and Kashmir since 2018, after governor’s rule was imposed following the BJP’s withdrawal of support from then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.

Abdullah emphasised the importance of inclusivity in governance, stating, “All I want to say is that Jammu will not be ignored in this government.”

The coalition between the National Conference and the Indian National Congress, which collectively secured 48 seats, signals a significant political shift in the region.
