Following Kashmir's Lead, Jammu Residents Protest Against Smart Meters

Scores of Jammu residents hit the streets in the summer capital of the erstwhile state to protest against the installation of smart meters.

Eyewitnesses told that hundreds of women on Monday hit the streets in Jammu’s Janipur area calling for the rollback of the order against the installation of smart metres.

Pertinently, protests have been taking place in the valley almost on daily basis against the curtailment of rice quota to Kashmir and against the installation of smart metres.

A woman protestor from Janipur said, “It is impossible for us to pay the electricity bills as we belong to the poor sections of the society. Amid this inflation, it gets hard for us to even manage the basic necessities, however, this latest dictum from the admin is highly unbearable to poor people.”

The protesting women said that the electricity smart metres have been enforced upon people with the consultation of any local representatives of people. “Why should we pay for even the blinking light that never stops to blink,” said another female protestor.

The locals have said that after thorough discussions the residents have decided to march for the Tawi bridge in the city on August 16 and a complete shutdown will be observed on the same day.
