On May 16, home ministry had announced Non Initiation of Combat Operations (NICO) in J&K during Ramazan. It was followed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s statement saying India was willing to engage with Hurriyat and Pakistan. Singh will visitJ&K later this week to assess ground situation and review security for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra.

“These attacks put a question mark on possibility of extension of NICO. However, if it is done, it will be a political decision keeping in view Amarnath Yatra. Security establishment is not entirely happy with these attacks and what is happening on militant landscape,” a senior police official told ET.

The militants have also started using IEDs since 2017 and in last the three weeks, two IEDs were planted in Shopian and Sopore. In Shopian, three army personnel were injured, while in Sopore, IED was diffused.
