Clashes in Sopore after two youth held during searches operation, scores injured

Four youth were injured after clashes erupted during a cordon-and-search-operation on the outskirts of Sopore town in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Tuesday.
Reports said that 22 RR of army, Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police and the CRPF launched a joint operation in Brath village following inputs about the presence of militants.
They said that the searches were on for several hours, however nothing was found. Few gunshots were also heard during the searches, but it was not immediately known who fired the shots. However, a police official later said that the search parties could have fired some speculative shots.
Reports and witnesses said that the situation turned ugly after the forces detained two locals – Khurshid Ahmed Mir, son of Abdul Rashid Mir and Mehraj Ahmed, both residents of Brath Kalan – during the search operation.
Youth took to streets and pelted the forces with stones to protest against the detention of the duo. Forces, according to an eye witness, responded with tear gas and pellets, leaving four youth injured.
He said the injured youth were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Further details are awaited.
