Boyfriend mistaken as braid-chopper, thrashed

In a bizarre twist to the ongoing mass hysteria surrounding the alleged braid chopping incidents, the people in north Kashmir today mistook a youth as a braid chopper.
A youth in Baramulla was thrashed mercilessly before he was rescued by the police. After preliminary questioning, it became clear that the boy had gone there to meet his girlfriend. The incident happened in the Delina locality of the north Kashmir this afternoon where people caught hold of the youth, identified as Nayeem Ahmad Malla, hailing from Dandusa village of Rafiabad, near the Srinagar-Baramulla national highway. Witnesses said he was moving around in a suspicious manner.
“A police party from Delina rushed to the spot. The boy was being thrashed mercilessly when the police rescue him,” a senior police officer said. A large number of “miscreants” attacked the police party as well, but the boy was rescued by firing tear smoke shells to disperse them, he added.
He said investigation had revealed that the boy was in a relationship with a local girl from Delina village, where he had gone to meet her when he was spotted and accused of being a braid chopper.
The police had registered a case in this regard and had warned that action would be taken against miscreants involved in today’s violence.
In another incident, people today caught a boy alleging him of being a braid cutter at Mazhama village in Budgam. However, he turned out to be a thief, the police said. Earlier also, the youth was arrested on theft charges, the police added.
