Burhan Wani was a trigger for mass uprising: Congress

NC seeks judicial probe into civilian killings

The opposition Congress Monday said killing of 21-year-old Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani triggered the mass uprising in Kashmir and the anger of people was in reaction to policies of the PDP-BJP government.
Speaking during the obituary references in the Assembly, senior Congress leader and MLA Leh, Nawang Rigzin Jora, described the unrest in Kashmir as a mass uprising, which evoked strong protests from the BJP and PDP members leading to pandemonium in the House.
“The psyche of Kashmiris was deeply hurt and Burhan was a trigger for the mass uprising,” he said adding Kashmiri situation can’t be described as an unrest or a law and order problem, but it was a mass uprising against the unholy PDP- BJP alliance, which has led to the disturbance in Kashmir.
Taking a dig on PDP and BJP on their contradictory stands, he said the pro-Hindu party which was speaking of one-constitution and one-flag was now toeing the line of the separatists in Kashmir.
“The PDP has betrayed interests of people in Kashmir by joining an unholy alliance,” he said.
It triggered a strong reaction from BJP members including Ravinder Raina and Sukhnadan Kumar, who accused Congress of doublespeak.
However, when BJP members rose to protest the remarks of Congress leader, NC MLA, Mohammad Akbar Lone supported Jora.
Following the noisy scenes, Speaker, Kavinder Gupta, ordered the members to follow the parliamentary etiquette.
Earlier speaking during the obituary references, senior NC leader and former Education Minister, Mohammad Shafi Uri, demanded that inquiries should be ordered into the killings of civilians in police and forces action.
He said hundreds of youth were injured and a judicial probe conducted into the circumstances that lead to these incidents. “This will uphold the democratic spirit in Kashmir.”
Independent MLA from Khansaheb, Hakeem Yaseen, also sought a judicial inquiry into the civilian killings and payment of ex-gratia to those killed in over 6-month long unrest.
Earlier CPIM leader and MLA Kulgam, M Y Tarigami, said the mothers, who have lost their children will not get them back.
Stating that Kashmiri unrest should have been a lesson for the Government of India (GoI), he said, “If a part of body is in pain, you can’t ignore it”.
