Feeling concerned and alarmed over the growing incidents of domestic violence against women by in-laws in the Valley, Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today called for boycotting the households demanding dowry and abetting married women to suicide. The call by Mirwaiz comes days after a woman in downtown Srinagar set herself on fire after alleged harassment by her in-laws. The woman succumbed to her burn injuries on September 28. It was the third case of self-immolation by a woman since May this year.
The incident took place on the evening of Eid-ul-Azha on September 25 at Kaw Mohallah, Khanyar in Srinagar.Terming the rising incidents of domestic violence and the death of a married woman in downtown Srinagar on the eve of Eid as unfortunate and shameful, Mirwaiz devoted his entire Friday sermon at Jamia Masjid on this issue. He also called for social boycott of people and households demanding dowry.Mirwaiz urged victims of domestic violence to report such atrocities immediately either to local mosque heads or the police station for action. He also asked mosque heads and intellectuals to speak against such atrocities and get united against crime like domestic violence.
