At a time when the beef ban controversy has put the state on the edge again, circulation of bovine slaughter videos on social networking sites can inflame the situation further.
Since the High Court ban on beef evoked a sharp reaction in the Valley, a number of videos with mocking messages were being forwarded through social messaging applications like WhatsApp.
The government has directed the police to keep a check on rumour-mongers and troublemakers, but there is no mechanism to stop circulation of provocative videos and pictures.
The misuse of social media sites has become a new menace for law enforcement agencies. In the absence of stringent laws, the police turn a blind eye to hatred being spread through internet.
It is being extensively used by communal elements to spread hatred and misinformation. The use of hate videos in J&Khas become routine.
“The only weapon the government uses is blocking the internet in the event of unrest. No effort is being taken to identify and act against people involved in orchestrating the campaign,” said a senior official of the Home Department.
