Rajouri Encounter: Two Army soldiers killed; Internet services suspended

Two Army soldiers were killed, and four others including an officer have been injured after terrorists triggered an explosive device during an encounter that broke out with the security forces on Friday morning in the Kandi area of Rajouri district, Jammu and Kashmir. According to army officials, terrorists belong to the same group that ambushed an army truck on April 20 in which at least five soldiers were killed and one more was injured.

“On specific information about the presence of terrorists in the Kandi forest in the Rajouri sector, a joint operation was launched. A search team established contact with a group of terrorists well entrenched in a cave. The area is thickly vegetated with rocky and steep cliffs,” the Indian army said in a statement.

The injured personnel have been taken to the Command hospital in Udhampur and additional teams from the vicinity have been directed to the site of the encounter, the army officials said.

As per initial reports, a group of terrorists are trapped in the area. “There is a likelihood of casualties in the terrorists’ group,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, mobile internet services have been suspended in Rajouri district, reported PTI citing officials.

On Thursday, suspected terrorists opened fire upon security forces in the Bijbhera area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district during which one police personnel sustained minor injuries. “Suspected militants on Thursday evening fired upon security forces at the Bijbhera area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district. In this incident, one cop received minor injuries. He has been shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. The area has been cordoned off to nab the attackers,” the Jammu and Kashmir police said.
