Fest aims to put Gurez on adventure tourism map

In an effort to put the virgin locations of Gurez on the tourism map, a three-day ‘Gurez Festival’, organised by the government, started on Saturday.
The festival will promote Gurez as a destination for adventure sports activities.
“Gurez has a lot of tourism potential. There is scope for all activities, including trekking, mountain biking and white water rafting, which need to be promoted through such festivals,” said Tourism Director, Kashmir, Mahmood A Shah.
Adventure sports activities like trekking, white water rafting, mountain biking and angling will be part of the festival.
The departments of horticulture, sericulture, apiculture and floriculture have set up stalls, highlighting their products at the festival.
Around 20 bikers from Srinagar and youth from Gurez participated in a mountain biking rally.
Gurez, which is situated close to the Line of Control (LoC), is considered a trekking paradise as one can trek from Gurez to Drass in Ladakh via the Mushko valley.
The government recently started a chopper service to Gurez to connect it with the rest of the state as it remains inaccessible by road during winter.
After the inauguration of the festival on Saturday, Minister of State for Tourism Priya Sethi said measures were being taken to improve connectivity to the picturesque valley, particularly during winter, to boost the tourist arrival.
She said the government would redouble efforts to bring Gurez on the world tourism map.Sethi launched a brochure on Gurez which provides information about the places to visit in the valley.
