Traffic police started ‘Challan Drive’ amid CurfewAmid curfew, Traffic police on Thursday made surprise appearance in city-centre areas to fine violators of traffic rules. On the deserted roads of civil lines, some senior officials of the traffic police checked the documents of commuters amid thin vehicular movement. The drive by traffic police evoked resentment among the commuters.

“It is illogical to conduct such drives when killing spree by forces is going on in Kashmir,” a scooterist said.
A motorist, who was stopped at TRC crossing by traffic cops, was asked to produce documents of the vehicle. However, the vehicle’s pollution under control certificate had expired on August 15. As the cops tried to impose fine on him, he said, “show me a single place where I could have got fresh pollution certificate? For past 41 days, entire Kashmir is mourning the civilian killings,” he told the cops.
Some of the commuters, who were on way to hospital, were also stopped by Traffic cops. They were allowed to move after checking documents. “Please, can you check all documents on priority. I have to reach hospital to donate blood for my one of my relatives. Do you think anyone would come out during curfew without any emergency?,” a commuter told a traffic cop.

Some commuters said that the validity of their insurance documents would expire in day one or two. “We cannot renew insurance policies of our vehicles in view of continuous curfew and shutdown. Authorities should take ground situation into consideration before launching such drives,” said a group of commuters.
