Death toll climbs to 47 & Army deeply regrets loss of life in Qazigund firingA woman injured in clashes between forces and protesters in South Kashmir succumbed at a hospital, taking the death toll in the ongoing unrest to 47.

Neelofar was injured in firing yesterday during clashes with army in Qazigund. Two other persons, including a woman, were killed and seven others injured in the incident.

Army on Tuesday expressed “deep regret” at the “unfortunate loss of life” in South Kashmir’s Qazigund, where troops were forced to open fire at protesters, killing three in the process. The death toll in the aftermath of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani’s killing has now climbed to 47.

The Army said a large mob turned violent and resorted to pelting stones at the troops. They attempted to snatch weapons from the security personnel, Army said.

An inquiry has been ordered to probe the incident, and the Army pledged to provide all possible assistance to the bereaved.

“The security force party while removing the obstructions came under heavy stone pelting by the miscreants from two sides. The Army party warned the mob to maintain distance but it did not relent.

“Some miscreants tried to snatch weapons from them and tried to set ablaze the vehicles. Despite repeated warnings the mob did not disperse and army fired in self defence in an effort to move out from the spot,” a J&K Police spokesman said yesterday.

Three persons, including two women, were killed and seven others injured in the firing.
