Winter sports resort of Valley, Gulmarg is going to host first ever Snow Shoe championship on Sunday.
The competition would be organized by SnowShoe Federation of India in collaboration with Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir. In the event SSFI keeping limited number of equipment available in State in mind has only allowed selected athletes of Valley to participate.
“It will be first time that SnowShoe event would be held in any part of the Country. Gulmarg will get the distinction of hosting that. It is more of introducing Snowshoe activity in State and Country rather than a championship,” said SSFI President Mir Mudassar.
“We have chosen around 24 athletes from all over the Valley who will participate in the event. They are going to compete in the qualifying rounds and only top eight among them will take participate in the final run,” he said.
He said that for the event Tourism officials at Gulmarg will prepare track in the Gulmarg bowl so that everyone can see athletes running using the Snowshoe equipment.
“SnowShoe is simply running using snowshoe equipment. It is not much different from normal running except the equipment use. We have only eight pairs of the equipment available with us that were provided to us by TSL outdoors while we were in Italy. The equipment is not available anywhere in India and we are trying to import more in coming year,” he added.
