Expert panel to help walnut, kernel sectorGovernor NN Vohra has directed the Agriculture Production Department to establish a committee of experts to look into all problems being faced by the walnut and kernel sector in the state.
The committee will be headed by Prof Nazeer Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Kashmir, said a Raj Bhawan spokesperson.
It will include the Director, Horticulture (Planning and Marketing), J&K; Director, Horticulture, Kashmir; Director, Horticulture, Jammu; Director, Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture, Kashmir; representatives of the industry and any other officer who may require to be co-opted by the chairman.
This committee will suggest short-term and long-term measures for advancement of walnut and kernel sectors; study the market and make necessary recommendations for improving profitability for growers; and examine any other issue which may be brought up before the committee, the spokesperson said.
It will submit its report within one month. Considering the importance of this sector, an allocation of Rs 500 crore has been earmarked for its development under the Prime Minister’s Development Package.
