Half-baked package for flood victims cruel joke: Congress

“The coalition government led by the PDP has betrayed the people of Jammu and Kashmir for the sake of gaining power. Tall claims by (Chief Minister) Mufti Mohammad Sayeed about the rehabilitation of the flood-affected were a political gimmick to secure votes from people in the Valley” GA Mir, JKPCC president.

Half-baked package for flood victims cruel joke - CongressThe Congress today said the claims of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the Assembly elections were a “political gimmick” to secure votes and the ruling party had “betrayed” the people for coming to power.
“The coalition government led by the PDP has betrayed the people of Jammu and
Kashmir for the sake of gaining power. Tall claims by (Chief Minister) Mufti
Mohammad Sayeed about the rehabilitation of the flood-affected were a political gimmick to secure votes from people in the Valley,” said J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president GA Mir.
Mir was reacting to the details provided by the government which declared that Rs 2,000 crore out of the Prime Minister’s Rs 80,000-crore package would be utilised for the rehabilitation of the victims of last year’s floods.
The JKPCC chief said the Congress had rejected the half-baked relief package for the flood-affected and termed it a cruel joke that added insult to the injuries of the victims.
He reminded that the previous UPA government had provided Rs 8 lakh for fully damaged houses, Rs 6 lakh for severely damaged and Rs 3 lakh for partially damaged houses after the Uttarakhand tragedy.
He regretted that for the flood victims of the state only Rs 3 lakh were sanctioned for fully damaged pucca houses and Rs 1.50 lakh for fully damaged kuccha houses.
The Valley traders too have alleged that the PDP has befooled people to come to power.
“The government plan of giving just Rs 2,000 crore as rehabilitation package for the flood-affected and out of that a mere Rs 800 crore are for the affected shopkeepers adds insult to the injury. The PDP befooled people only to come to power, and to be in power,” said Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation president Mohammed Yasin Khan.
Khan, who also heads the Kashmir Economic Alliance, said: “The PDP said elections would bring a better government which would work for the flood-affected. What happened to that promise?”
He alleged that the PDP had served the interests of its RSS masters in Nagpur by not pressing for the Rs 44,000-crore package which was sought by the previous National Conference-Congress government.
Khan said the business community would soon announce a programme to push for their demands.
