Leh erupts over sexual assault on 6 year old boy

Protests erupted in Leh town to condemn the alleged sexual assault on a six-year-old boy in Shey Lamdon School in the district. The residents demanded serious action against the accused.
A peaceful procession was taken out from Chokhang Vihara to Polo Ground. Thousands of school students, including people from all walks of life, carrying placards and banners raised slogans. The Civilian Alliance Society in collaboration with the NGOs working for child rights along with leaders of religions organisations and political affiliations took part in the protest and expressed solidarity with the victim and his family. Addressing the gathering, all the religious leaders urged the authorities to punish the accused as per the law and to stand united to get justice to the victim.
Meanwhile, Ladakh Buddhist Association president Tsewang Thinles announced that the association would support his education throughout his career.
Meanwhile, the accused has been sent to 14-day judicial custody. After widespread demand, a three-member special investigation team (SIT) was also constituted under Deputy SP Sonam Dorje to probe the case. On June 17, a hostel warden identified as Tashi Gatso, a Tibetan refugee of the school, was arrested after a complaint of sexual abuse and physical torture of a six-year-old boy was lodged. The victim is being treated at the SNM Hospital.
