Students hold Sit-In, demand Ban on Liquor

‘Govt can’t adopt double standards on pretext of freedom of choice’

Students hold Sit-In, demand Ban on LiquorScores of students from various educational institutions on Thursday held a sit-in to press for ban on sale of liquor in Kashmir.
The protesters assembled at Pratap Park and staged protests. “Government is reluctant to impose ban on sale and trade of liquor in Muslim majority state in the name of freedom of choice. Government cannot adopt double standards in the matter of freedom of choice,” they said.
“Government is promoting liquor in the state in the name of freedom of choice. If Hindu majority states can ban the liquor why not J&K which is Muslim majority state. If government claims that drinking liquor is a matter of freedom of choice, eating beef is also freedom of choice,” they said.
“Government must ban liquor or else must revoke beef ban to allow people to exercise freedom of choice. The state of J&K is generating revenue of Rs 500 crore from the liquor while Bihar was generating Rs 6000 crore revenue from it. Still, the Bihar showed courage and banned it,” they added.
