Hottest day in 10 yrs; Mercury to rise further: MeT
Srinagar recorded highest day temperature in June in the past ten years as Meteorological Department has predicted hotter days in the coming week.
“The maximum temperature in Srinagar was 34.4 degrees Celsius, four degrees above average, which is the highest recorded so far in last ten years. Jammu city recorded 38.7 degrees Celsius as the heat wave continued unabated,” a Met department official said here.
Director MeT Department, Sonam Lotus while talking to Kashmir Post described the reason to prolonged dry spell. “We are also living in tropical area,” he said adding that temperature will likely rise in coming days.
“We are not expecting any major changes in the coming days. Such conditions do occur in Kashmir,” lotus said.
Expert Advice:
Dr Muhammad Saleem Khan, HoD, social and preventive medicine SMHS Hospital said elderly people and children must take precautions. “There is no chance of a Sun stroke in these conditions. It happens when the mercury rises to 40 degrees Celsius,” he said adding that people should drink lot of water during Iftaar and Sehri times.
Dr Khan said that elderly and children should stay indoors.

The data furnished by MeT office says that Srinagar recorded 33.2 degrees Celsius in 2006, 34.3 degrees Celsius in 2007, 33. 3 degrees Celsius in 2008, 33.4 degrees Celsius in 2009, 32.5 degrees Celsius in 2010, 33.8 degrees Celsius in 2011, 32.6 degrees Celsius 2012, 34.1 degrees Celsius in 2013, 33.9 degrees Celsius in 2014, and 32.6 degrees Celsius in 2015.
