Bone-Chilling Cold Intensifies in Kashmir Valley: Frosty Days Ahead

Cold conditions intensify in Kashmir

Cold conditions intensified in Kashmir, with the minimum temperature dipping on Saturday and the Met office predicting mostly dry weather till the end of the month, officials said.

Night temperatures dropped further across the Kashmir valley as the cold tightened its grip, they said. The minimum temperature in Srinagar settled at minus 4.1 degrees Celsius, compared to the previous night’s minus 3.3 degrees, the Met office said.

Pahalgam, one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 8.2 degrees Celsius against minus 7 degrees the night before. The tourist resort town of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of minus 9 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature was minus 4.4 degrees Celsius in Qazigund, minus 5.5 degrees at Konibal in Pampore town, minus 4.8 degrees in Kupwara and minus 2.2 degrees in Kokernag.

Kashmir is currently in the grip of ‘Chillai-Kalan’ — the harshest period of winter. During the 40 days of ‘Chillai-Kalan’, which began on December 21, the chances of snowfall are the highest and the mercury drops considerably.

‘Chillai-Kalan’ ends on January 30, followed by a 20-day ‘Chillai-Khurd’ (small cold) and a 10-day ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold).

The Meteorological Department predicts that this cold spell will continue for the next several days. There’s also a forecast of fresh snowfall in the higher reaches, which could further lower the temperatures in the region. This could impact road connectivity, especially along the Srinagar-Jammu highway, a vital link for the valley.

For the people of Kashmir, braving the cold is part of life, but that doesn’t make it any less challenging. Traditional heating methods like the ‘Kangri’, a portable fire pot, are once again in use, and families gather around ‘Bukharis’ (wooden stoves) to keep warm. The markets are bustling with people buying warm clothing and essential supplies to prepare for the days ahead.

If you’re in the region, it’s crucial to take precautions:

  • Dress in Layers: Wear multiple layers of warm clothing to retain body heat.
  • Stay Indoors: Limit time spent outside, especially during the early morning and late evening when temperatures are lowest.
  • Ensure Proper Heating: Be cautious with heating devices to prevent any accidents.
  • Check on Neighbors: The elderly and those living alone might need assistance during such times.

Did you know? Despite the cold, this season offers some of the most picturesque landscapes in Kashmir. The snow-clad mountains and the serene beauty attract tourists who wish to experience a winter wonderland. If you’re planning to visit, make sure to be well-prepared for the cold and check travel advisories.
