Friday prayers at Jamia after 5 weeks, Mirwaiz slams Govt for ‘Linking liquor with Tourism’

Govt’s promotion of un-Islamic ways unacceptable: Mirwaiz

Hurriyat (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and Jamia Masjid chief cleric warned the government that promoting tourism through “un-islamic ways isn’t acceptable to the people of Kashmir.’’ Mirwaiz was delivering the sermon on the occasion of congregational prayers at the Masjid which were allowed after five weeks.
“We all want that more and more tourists visit Kashmir. No one is against the promotion of tourism. But promoting tourism through un-islamic ways is totally unacceptable to us,” he said.
During his Friday speech, Mirwaiz said the ruling PDP-BJP dispensation is playing a “dirty game in Kashmir” and wants to open a liquor shop at International airport which would be opposed “tooth and nail.”
“The airport is after the name of Sheikh-ul- Aalam (RA). Do you want to open a liquor shop at the place? We won’t let it happen at any cost,” Mirwaiz said. He said that the government “tries to ruin the religious character and Islamic fabric of Kashmiri society” which is a Muslim majority region.
“We have already two liquor shops here. One is next to the childrens’ hospital, which is shame. And these liquor shops are running under the patronage of the government,” Mirwaiz said.
Mirwaiz also said that if the government of the “day thinks that by shutting down Valley’s largest religious place, Jamia Masjid, it would suppress `our voice’ the pulpit of Jamia Masjid would continue to raise the voice of Kashmiris and continue to fight for the legitimate rights of Kashmiris.”
“This is highly condemnable that the government denies our religious rights. Such tactics won’t deter our resolve,” he said. He asked the government to release all the political prisoners and stop putting youth behind the bars. “Our youth have been thrown into jails that forces them to pick up guns,” he added.
