While thousands of stranded attendants are itching to go home due to prevalent situation, but local volunteers at SKIMS are ensuring that none has to sleep without having food.
Amid crisis and chaos in the Srinagar tertiary healthcare institution, SKIMS the resilience of Kashmir is evident from the fact that local volunteers of adjacent mohallas have organized community kitchen to serve food to patients and attendants.
The Relief Committee Anchar- a self help group constituted by three mohalla committees- is serving food to estimated 2000 people on daily basis post eruption of protests after killing of Hizb Commander Burhan Wani.
“We are serving food to around 2000 people a day,” said Bilal Ahmad, a volunteer of the relief committee.
Ahmad says that committee was established following killings took place in South Kashmir as thousands of patients were stranded in SKIMS who had no money to buy food.
“We organised community kitchen and since then we are serving food to our brethren,” Ahmad said.
“Our committee comprises of three mohallas who are contributing from their own pockets for this langar,” he said.
“In 2010, after serving food during the turbulent situation, police officials started harassing our volunteers,” he said adding that they are working purely on humanitarian basis.
“It is such a situation where if we won’t help our own people, who would,” said Gulzar Ahmad adding that besides food they are also organizing free medicines, financial help who need it.
The services of the committee is being appreciated by the attendants at SKIMS. “We are thankful to the organizers of the community kitchen who are serving us food as we have run short of money and ATMs are not functioning neither can we withdraw money from banks,” said Manzoor Ahmad, an attendant.
