Winter Vacation in Kashmir: DSEK Submits Proposal Due to Severe Weather

DSEK Proposes Phased Winter Vacation for Kashmir Schools

Srinagar, December 3, 2024
– The Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has submitted a proposal to the government, suggesting a phased winter vacation for schools in Kashmir starting from December 9, 2024. This decision comes in response to the severe weather conditions, including a cold wave and dense fog, which have made it difficult for students to travel to and from school safely.

Phased Vacation Schedule According to the proposal, the winter vacation for classes up to 2nd primary will begin on December 9, 2024, and continue until February 24, 2025. For classes from 3rd primary to class 12th, the vacation is proposed to start a week later, on December 16, 2024, and also end on February 24, 2025.

Reasoning Behind the Proposal The DSEK has emphasized the necessity of declaring winter vacation due to the prevailing weather conditions. “The situation has necessitated the declaration of the winter vacation. Hence the proposal is submitted for your kind perusal and further necessary action and orders,” reads the proposal submitted to the Principal Secretary School Education Department.

Parental Concerns While the proposal has been welcomed by many, some parents have raised concerns about the staggered schedule. “Segregating primary classes into two groups does not serve any purpose. How can we announce winter vacation for a 2nd primary kid and ask the 3rd primary students to attend the school in the prevailing cold weather conditions,” said Muhammad Faizan, a parent from Kupwara. Other parents echoed similar sentiments, urging the government to consider announcing winter vacation for all primary classes on the same date.

Government Response The proposal is currently under review by the Administrative Department, and a decision is expected soon. The Director of School Education Kashmir, Tasaduq Hussain Mir, mentioned that the winter vacation would be announced after the commencement of new classification following the culmination of the Term-II summative assessment of students up to class 9th.

Conclusion As Kashmir continues to experience harsh winter conditions, the DSEK’s proposal for a phased winter vacation aims to ensure the safety and well-being of students. The final decision will be made by the government, taking into consideration the concerns of parents and the prevailing weather conditions.
