Srinagar Experiences First Snowfall of the Season: Winter Arrives in Kashmir

Srinagar, December 27, 2024
– Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, has experienced its first snowfall of the season, marking the beginning of winter. Images of snowfall in Pulwama, Anantnag, and Srinagar have quickly spread across social media, bringing joy and excitement to residents and tourists alike.

Snowfall and Weather Conditions

Recent snowfall in various parts of Kashmir has brought a slight increase in minimum temperatures, according to officials cited by PTI. A western disturbance hit Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, resulting in snowfall across several regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rain in the Jammu plains and higher regions of Chenab Valley and Pir Panjal. In the middle and higher parts of South and Central Kashmir, light snowfall is expected in the evening.

Impact on Infrastructure and Daily Life

The snowfall has led to the closure of the Srinagar-Leh Highway and Mughal Road. The region is experiencing intense cold-wave conditions, with minimum temperatures dropping below freezing. Water supply lines have frozen, and a thin layer of ice has formed on the surface of water bodies, including Dal Lake. Srinagar recorded a low of -7.3 degrees Celsius on Thursday night, down from -7 degrees Celsius the previous night. Gulmarg, a popular skiing destination in north Kashmir, reported a temperature of -6 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam, the base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a minimum temperature of 8 degrees Celsius.

Weather Forecast

The weather is expected to remain dry from December 29 to 31, with slight snowfall possible in isolated areas of Kashmir from January 1 to 5. The weather department predicts a rise in temperatures starting Monday. Kashmir is currently experiencing ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ the harshest period of winter, which began on December 21. This 40-day period is characterized by the highest chances of snowfall and significantly low temperatures, ending on January 30, 2025. This is followed by ‘Chillai Khurd,’ lasting 20 days, and ‘Chillai-Bachha,’ lasting 10 days.

Airport and Travel Disruptions

The first major snowfall in Srinagar on Friday caused significant disruptions at Srinagar International Airport, leading to the cancellation of all flights. The Director of Srinagar Airport informed KINS that snow accumulation disrupted evening flights, resulting in the cancellation of five flights. Passengers are advised to check flight statuses regularly as ongoing snowfall continues to affect operations.

Snow accumulation on the runway and dense cloud cover have made it unsafe for aircraft operations. An airport spokesperson emphasized that passenger and crew safety remains a top priority, and operations are heavily dependent on weather conditions. Passengers at the airport have expressed mixed reactions to the delays, with some appreciating the beauty of the snowfall despite the inconvenience.

Tourist Reactions

For tourists, the snowfall has been both a delight and a challenge. Many have expressed excitement at experiencing Kashmir’s winter beauty, though travel plans have been disrupted. Authorities have advised travelers to stay updated on weather and traffic conditions before making travel arrangements.

KINS reported that the Meteorological Department expects additional snowfall in the next 24 hours, particularly in higher areas, which may cause further delays in flight schedules. Travelers are encouraged to stay in touch with airlines for real-time updates and consider alternate arrangements if necessary.

Local Impact

The snowfall has brought joy to many residents, who see it as a blessing. Farooq Ahmad, a resident of Srinagar, told KINS, “Snowfall is part of life in Kashmir. While it may cause delays, it’s also a time to celebrate the beauty of our region.”

Authorities have closed traffic on the Mughal Road, Sinthan Kishtwar Road, Srinagar-Ladakh Road, and several border area roads due to snow and slippery conditions. Traffic on the Jammu-Kashmir highway is moving slowly due to slippery roads, with men and machinery deployed to clear the paths.

Weather experts have noted that the ongoing active Western Disturbance appears to be more intense than initially expected. Significant snowfall is predicted in higher altitudes, with accumulations ranging between 12 and 18 inches. Some plains in South Kashmir may also experience substantial snowfall.

This weather system is expected to remain active until tomorrow afternoon, with intermittent breaks and possible weather improvements later in the evening.

Conclusion

As winter blankets Kashmir in snow, residents and tourists alike are reminded of the region’s unique beauty and challenges. The administration is working to ensure that roads are cleared and essential services are maintained, while locals and visitors enjoy the picturesque snowfall and the festive atmosphere it brings.
