The cold wave conditions across Kashmir intensified as the night temperature dropped several notches below the freezing point
Meteorological department director Sonum Lotus said there would not be any significant changes in the weather in the coming week
“There can be light snowfall in the upper reaches on January 5, but as such there won’t be any significant changes for the week,” the official said
Currently, Kashmir is in the grip of ‘chillai kalan’, the 40-day harshest winter period when the mercury goes below the freezing point and the cold wave intensifies
Lotus said for the next 24 hours, the sky would be mainly clear with haze in the summer capital
“The maximum and minimum temperatures in Srinagar will be around 12°C and -4°C, respectively,” he said
Kargil was the coldest at -9.6°C while it was -7.1°C in Leh
“In Leh, the sky will be mainly clear while the maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 3°C and -13°C, respectively, on Friday,” Lotus said
The minimum temperature in Srinagar was -2.7°C and -2.5°C and -4°C in Pahalgam and Gulmarg
The night’s lowest temperature in Jammu was 7.8°C, 8°C in Katra, 4.3°C in Batote, 0.8°C in Banihal, 2°C in Bhaderwah and 4.2°C in Udhampur, he added.
