Durbar staff must keep homes secure, Police issues advisory

With several Srinagar families moving to Jammu after the shifting of the Durbar, the J&K Police have issued an advisory to citizens not to leave their houses unattended as they may be used by anti-national elements.
“It has come to notice that Durbar move employees and a good number of citizens from Hazratbal subdivision (in Srinagar) usually shift their families to Jammu and leave their houses unattended. This practice often offers a chance to miscreants and other offenders to trespass into these houses which result in burglary and also these are used as dens by anti-national elements for committing various crimes,” read a recent advisory issued by the Subdivision Police Officer, Hazratbal.
As an annual ritual, the civil secretariat and other Durbar offices, involving over 8000 employees, closed on October 27 and 28. They will reopen in the winter capital of the state on November 6. Almost 50 per cent of the total number of the Durbar employees from Kashmir move to Jammu along with their families for winter months. With the families leaving, many houses remain unattended, prompting the police to issue an advisory to keep watchmen at their houses.
“It is also advised that if they take their families along with them, they should keep chowkidars or watchmen in their respective houses/homes to safeguard their homes in their absence. Besides, they should not keep important things like cash and jewellery in their homes while their stay in the winter capital or outside the state,” the advisory said.
The police said it was not possible for them to keep a watch on every house.
