The Jammu and Kashmir Coordination Committee (JKCC), an amalgam of various trade bodies, today flayed the government for placing under house arrest its leaders ahead of the proposed sit-in on Tuesday.
JKCC coordinator Siraj Ahmad said an emergency meeting of the amalgam was held today where the members expressed “utter disbelief, shock and surprise over the unwarranted and uncalled for house arrest of its leaders, Dr Mubeen Shah and Mohammad Yasin Khan”.
He said they had been put under house arrest today as the JKCC had called for a sit-in on Tuesday against the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST). The JKCC had been formed recently to oppose and garner support against the GST.
“It is most unfortunate that the business community and civil society, considered responsible and respectable in the entire globe, is being subjected to humiliation and vendetta in the so-called democracy here. A silent sit-in announced by the JKCC for Tuesday has unnerved and unsettled the state government,” said Ahmad.
Meanwhile, Kashmir Traders’ Federation (KTF) chief spokesperson Ajaz Shahdhar extended supported the protest programme call given by the JKCC at Lal Chowk on August 8.
He said the KTF would continue to make efforts to oppose the moves aimed at weakening Article 370 that gives special powers to J&K.
