Will continue to oppose GST: J&K Coordination Committee

The Jammu and Kashmir Coordination Committee (JKCC), an amalgam of traders’ bodies and civil society members, today said it would continue to create awareness against the goods and service tax (GST) by involving larger sections of the society.
“People now understand how we were deceived by the government on the GST. We are currently on job and holding consultations with different stakeholders. We will soon conduct a seminar and will also decide on the future course of action,” said JKCC convenor Siraj Ahmad.
The JKCC, which had recently been formed to fight against the extension of GST, has already threatened an agitation in case the Presidential Order on the new law was not revoked.
The amalgam had stated that it would oppose the moves aimed at eroding Article 370 that grants special status to the state while claiming that through the extension of the GST, the government had surrendered the power to pursue its own fiscal policy and the state legislature and the state Cabinet have been reduced to zero on financial matters. “The absolute powers on taxation have been surrendered to the GST council. J&K had absolute powers to tax services by its own law. This exclusive authority has been surrendered,” Ahmad added.
