Last year’s devastating flood in Kashmir valley has been listed as world’s worst economical disaster in 2014.
Kashmir floods listed as world’s worst economical disaster in 2014According to a report prepared by Annual Disaster Statistical Review, Kashmir incurred losses of $16 billion (104000 crore INR) followed by Cyclone Hudhud in south India with a total estimation of losses to $7 billion (45,500 crore INR).
Kashmir floods have also been the 8th worst disaster in terms of number of people affected. As per the report, 3.60 million people were affected due to the floods.
The Kashmir floods have also been listed as the 5th most deadly disaster worldwide in 2014 with a death toll touching 300.
The state government has come under severe criticism for not doing enough to mitigate the sufferings of flood victims.
Opposition parties National Conference and Congress have confronted government on its failure to secure the much awaited central rehabilitation package from Government of India to provide succor to the flood victims.
Disappointed over the lackadaisical approach of state and centre government, the business community called for shutdowns and organized various protests in the recent past.
Government of India is yet to approve the Rs 44,000 crore package, which was submitted to it by the previous NC-Congress government headed by Omar Abdullah.
