ACC’s hunger strike enters 22nd day over AIIMS row

The chain hunger strike demanding the setting up of AIIMS today entered its 22nd consecutive day even as the AIIMS Coordination Committee (ACC) came down heavily on the BJP for its “failure” to come-out with appropriate order for establishing the medical institute in Jammu.

ACC's hunger strike enters 22nd day over AIIMS rowACC chairman and president JKHCBA, Jammu, Abhinav Sharma alleged that BJP, instead of bringing an appropriate order for establishing AIIMS in Jammu, is “misleading” the people of Jammu region through its “misinformation” campaign and big hoardings that the Narendra Modi led government at Centre has also “sanctioned” an AIIMS for Jammu.

“There is nothing for the dishonest and rabble-rousing BJP to congratulate the Prime Minister.

“There is only one letter that talks about identification of alternate pieces of land at both in Jammu and Srinagar. It nowhere says that an AIIMS will be established in Jammu,” Sharma said addressing a gathering at the dharna site.

He said “it (letter) only says that the Government of India will establish All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in Jammu & Kashmir”.

“The chain huger strike entered 22nd day as a fresh batch of 12 protesters today took their turn to sit for the day-long hunger strike in support of AIIMS demand for Jammu”, an ACC spokesman said.

“The strike will continue till demand is not fulfilled”, he said.

The ACC resumed the strike on July 21 – after calling off their first leg of strike – after written assurances from Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh and Forest Minister Bali Bhagat to get orders from centre for setting up AIIMS in Jammu.

ACC, an amalgamation of over 70 organisations, is leading the agitation for setting up of an AIIMS in the Jammu region.
